rivy-major oponda's story

My artwork reflects the celebrations of Hong Kong and New York, two places I call home. Both are often marked by wet ground, creating reflections and ripples that inspire my work and symbolize overlapping memories. The messy and scattered elements represent the lively energy of Lunar New Year, while the round shapes throughout the pieces symbolize wholeness, life, fortune, wealth, and family. From Hong Kong, I draw inspiration from mandarins tied to lai see envelopes thrown at wishing trees, carrying hopes for luck and fortune. In New York, I celebrate with confetti poppers and fortune-cookie-like messages written in both Chinese and English, wishing happiness, luck, and success. This series blends traditions from both cities, celebrating shared joy while honoring their unique cultures.
